Eating Seasonally

Fall is finally here! For us Arizonans, fall is a brief transition over from a sizzling summer to a mild winter. For those in the Midwest, fall is a season with beautiful and vibrant foliage changes. With changing season, seasonal produce changes. In this article, we will explore why you should buy and consume seasonal produce and different seasonal produce.

Why eat seasonal produce? Not only are some produce only available during that season, there are multiple benefits of buying and eating seasonal produce. Even though we are accustomed to finding most common produce items all year round, produce that is in season tastes better and is fresher. Because they are picked during that season, it eliminates the need to keep the produce over months or having to import from countries with different climate (travelling impacts the freshness of the produce!). This is also critical to preserving nutrients. Also, since it is more abundant and available, seasonal produce are often cheaper than produce that are not in season. Following a loose guideline of seasonal produce can also help boost your cooking creativity or challenge you to cook with vegetables that you are perhaps not familiar with, increasing diversity of produce consumed.

Joining a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) or shopping at a local farmers market is an easy way to start shopping and eating seasonally and while supporting local farmers.
